Plant Physiology 54:503-505 (1974) © 1974 American Society of Plant Biologists Metabolism of Glutamate in Suspension Cultures of Paul's Scarlet Rose Cellsa Department of Botany and Microbiology, University of Oklahoma, Norman, Oklahoma 73069 When specifically labeled glutamate-1-14C was provided to 4-day-old rose cells, 87.6% of the 14C in glutamate recovered from protein was in the number 1 carbon atom of the glutamate molecule. It was concluded that newly absorbed glutamate was incorporated directly into protein without any prior metabolism. A double labeling study with acetate-U-14C and glutamate-U-3H showed the availability of absorbed glutamate for protein synthesis was equal to that of endogenously synthesized glutamate.
