Ultraviolet Radiation-stimulated Efflux of 86-Rubidium from Cultured Tobacco Cells 1

Lawrence A. Wright, Jr. and Terence M. Murphy

Department of Botany, University of California, Davis, California 95616

Ultraviolet (254 nm) radiation stimulated the efflux of 86Rb+ from liquid-cultured tobacco (Nicotiana tabacum) cells; it did not stimulate the movement of mannitol or 2-deoxyglucose. These results indicate that the efflux of 86Rb+ is not to a generalized disruption of membrane structure.
