RETRACTION

RETRACTION

Vol. 123: 725–732, 2000

Romagni J.G., Duke S.O., and Dayan F.E. Inhibition of Plant Asparagine Synthetase by Monoterpene Cineoles.

The work published in this article was performed between 1998 and 2000. The many different experiments (in vivo and in vitro assays) performed at that time provided a complete and compelling explanation of the mode of action of the natural product-like herbicide cinmethylin. This report demonstrated that asparagine synthetase was a suitable herbicide target site sensitive to cineole derivatives. In 2002, Dr. Dayan was contacted by a Japanese company that generated compounds they believed acted like cinmethylin and the cineoles natural products. In the process of testing these compounds, the authors used cinmethylin and cineole as positive controls and found that the compounds did not have the same in vivo and in vitro effects. Because cinmethylin is no longer synthesized, a different batch of cinmethylin (the first batch being exhausted) was used. As a result, the authors considered the possibility that they might have tested a different form of the compound. However, this explanation is not satisfactory since they have been unable to reproduce the data with several batches of cineoles purchased from Sigma.

At present, the authors have not been able to determine the reasons that their experiments are no longer reproducible. Therefore, the article has been retracted at the authors' request.
