On the Cover: Drought prevented most of the ovaries from developing on this maize ear, and only seven are normal. This type of arrest is irreversible, and the embryos abort. Zinselmeier et al. (pp. 25-35) found that starch disappears in ovary tissues and causes arrest. Suc fed to the stems maintains some of the starch and the viability of many of the embryos, but recovery is incomplete. Using the Suc feeding technique, the authors find a partial block in starch biosynthesis at the first enzymatic step (invertase).
