About the Cover

Cover Figure

On the Cover: Aluminum-resistant (alr) mutants were isolated from Arabidopsis and found to possess two distinctly different mechanisms of Al resistance. alr mutants that mapped to a locus on chromosome 1 exhibited a root apex Al-exclusion mechanism that correlated with increased release of Al-chelating organic acids. An alr mutant that mapped to a locus on chromosome 4 excluded Al from the root apex via a different mechanism involving an Al-induced stimulation of H+ influx along the root apex. This mutant provides the first evidence for an Al resistance mechanism based on Al-induced increase in root surface pH. In Larsen et al. (pp. 9-17) and Degenhardt et al. (pp. 19-27), a detailed genetic and physiological analysis of these two types of alr mutants is presented.
