About the Cover
On the Cover: A large number of higher plant glycoproteins are glycosylated with a newly identified Lewis a-containing N-glycan. Lewis a N-glycans are not only abundant in plants, they are also highly immunogenic in mammals. A purified antibody that specifically recognizes Lewis a-containing plant N-glycans strongly labels glycoproteins present in the Golgi apparatus and at the plasma membrane of a wide range of plant cells. The cover illustration shows immunofluorescence labeling of a single tomato root tip cell with the anti-plant Lewis antibody. This and other observations by Fitchette et al. (pp. 383-389) indicate that Lewis a epitopes are excellent Golgi markers for both immunofluorescence and immunogold microscopy.
