On the Cover: Brassinosteroids play important roles throughout plant development. Mutants that are defective in brassinosteroid biosynthesis or response display a characteristic mutant phenotype that includes a dwarfed stature with epinastic round leaves and short petioles. Previous genetic screens in Arabidopsis for brassinosteroid signaling mutants have led to the identification of only one gene, BRASSINOSTEROID-INSENSITIVE 1 (BRI1), that encodes an essential component of a membrane brassinosteroid receptor. Li et al. (pp. 14-22) have identified two semi-dominant mutations in Arabidopsis that give rise to bri1-like phenotypes. Their studies indicated that these two mutations define a new genetic locus, BRASSINOSTEROID-INSENSITIVE 2 (BIN2), which might encode a negative regulator in plant steroid signaling.
