About the Cover

On the Cover: Plant peroxisomes house the enzymes required for fatty acid beta -oxidation. Peroxisomes also beta -oxidize the naturally occurring auxin indole-3-butyric acid (IBA) to indole-3-acetic acid (IAA). Zolman et al. (pp. 1266-1278) have identified pxa1, an IBA-resistant, IAA-sensitive mutant that is sucrose-dependent for seedling establishment after germination. Whereas growth on 5 µM IBA induces numerous lateral roots in wild-type Arabidopsis plants (left), pxa1 does not form secondary roots in response to IBA (right). PXA1 encodes an ABC transporter-like protein homologous to human peroxisomal membrane proteins. PXA1 apparently imports fatty acids and IBA into peroxisomes, where they are beta -oxidized to acetyl-CoA and IAA, respectively.
