On the Cover: Transport phloem, the stretch between the sites of loading and unloading, makes up the major part of the phloem pathway. Despite their quantitative importance, cellular environment and impact of transport phloem on whole-plant physiology have been largely neglected. However, activities of transport phloem may have far-reaching consequences for photoassimilate distribution between plant organs, for long-distance signaling by macromolecules and sugars and for virus spread. A phloem special including contributions of Ayre et al. (pp. 1518-1528, Cernusak et al. (pp. 1544-1554), Gao et al. (pp. 1566-1575), van Dongen et al. (pp. 1529-1543), Wright et al. (pp. 1555-1565), and Yoshimoto et al. (pp. 1511-1517) highlights some of the functional peculiarities of transport phloem (cover designed by Jens B. Hafke and Aart J.E. van Bel).
