About the Cover
On the Cover: The cover of this issue depicts a consensus map of the chromosomes of eight key legume crops and model plants (see the Update by H. Zhu et al., pp. 1189–1196 in this issue, for details). Comparative mapping among legumes, enabled by the conserved gene order, is already facilitating gene identification and isolation. The emerging genomic sequences of Medicago truncatula and Lotus japonicus are expected to further leverage advances from these models to gains in crop research. The consensus map is superimposed on photographs of the following legumes (clockwise, from top): bluebonnet (Lupinus texensis), soybean (Glycine max) flowers and pods, barrel medic (M. truncatula) pods, birdsfoot trefoil (Lotus corniculatus), crownvetch (Coronilla varia), M. truncatula foliage, and alfalfa (Medicago sativa). Photographs were contributed by David Hansen (University of Minnesota, Agricultural Experiment Station), and Dasharath Lohar and Kate VandenBosch (University of Minnesota). The cover image was designed by Ash Csikos and Jon Munn.
