Average cell division rate ( D̅ ) and cell cycle duration ( T̅ _{c}) over the whole of the meristem at 6, 8, and 10 d after sowing (mean ± se; n = 10). Average cell division rate was calculated as the total cell production in the meristem, i.e. final flux, divided by the number of cells in the meristem; the average cell cycle duration was calculated as the inverse of average division rate multiplied by ln(2) (see Methods). Significance denotes the overall significance of the difference between days, determined by multivariate analysis of variance.
